Tourist info
Answers to the questions everyone asks before their first trip to Phu Quoc. Verified, up-to-date information, no fluff.
The best time is the dry season from November to April, the sun shines almost every day, the sea is calm and clear, and underwater visibility reaches 15 metres. Peak season is December–March, with temperatures of 27–33°C and almost zero chance of rain. May–October is the monsoon season with short, intense downpours, but there are far fewer crowds and prices can be 30–50% lower. The brief tropical showers usually last an hour and do not spoil the whole day.
Phu Quoc has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The dry season (November–April): air temperatures of 27–33°C, minimal rainfall, cloudless skies and a calm sea. The rainy season (May–October): short, intense downpours usually in the afternoon or evening, temperatures of 28–32°C, with the sea occasionally rough, especially in September and October. The sea water is warm all year round, around 28–30°C.
The official currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Approximate rate: 1 USD is about 25,000 VND. Cash is easiest to exchange locally, at the airport or in exchange offices in the centre of Duong Dong. Payment cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and chain stores, but at markets, street vendors and local eateries cash rules. It is always worth carrying small banknotes.
Phu Quoc is one of the safest places in South-East Asia. Crime against tourists is exceptionally rare. It is worth taking basic precautions in market crowds, not leaving valuables unattended on the beach and riding a scooter carefully, especially on the unpaved roads in the island's interior. Essentials: SPF 50+ sunscreen, mosquito repellent at dusk and a hat in the middle of the day.
Yes, without any problems. Local SIM cards (Viettel, Mobifone, Vietnamobile) are available right at the airport or in any shop in town. A 20–30 GB data package for 30 days costs just 5–10 USD. 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the inhabited part of the island, only deep in the National Park can it be weaker. Free Wi-Fi is available in all hotels, cafés and most restaurants.
The must-eat list on Phu Quoc: bánh mì with local fillings (better than anywhere else in Vietnam), bún quậy (a unique local fish noodle soup), grilled crabs and lobsters straight off the ice at Dinh Cau market, hủ tiếu (noodles with seafood in an aromatic broth), gỏi cuốn (fresh spring rolls with prawns), nước mắm Phú Quốc (the famous fish sauce made only on the island for generations) and all the tropical fruit on offer, mango, passion fruit, dragon fruit and rambutan straight from the crate.
